Thich Nahant Hanh10-9-05
On October 8th, 2005, I had a rare and unforgettable opportunity. I joined a peace walk in downtown Los Angeles, led by none other than Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. This wasn't just any event—it marked a powerful moment in his life. After years of exile, he was returning to his homeland, and this walk was part of that journey back. His presence brought together so many people who were all united by a shared desire for peace.
Back then, I was just getting started in photojournalism. This was one of my first big projects, and I captured thousands of images that day, documenting not just an event but a movement. Nearly two decades later, I’ve finally sifted through them and selected 60 of my favorite photographs that truly capture the essence of that day.
I had just started using my first digital SLR camera, and in those early days of digital photography, there was a sense of excitement and responsibility. I knew these photos weren’t just for me—they were for everyone who couldn’t be there, to help them see, feel, and understand the significance of what happened that day.
Thich Nhat Hanh was more than just a spiritual leader. He was a symbol of peace and mindfulness across the globe. Born in Vietnam in 1926, his life’s work centered around compassion, mindfulness, and nonviolence. He played a significant role during the Vietnam War, founding relief organizations and advocating for reconciliation. His commitment to peace was so impactful that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967.
What made this event so special wasn’t just the walk itself, but the way Thich Nhat Hanh led it—with mindfulness, calm, and purpose. He taught us that walking isn’t just a way to get from one place to another—it’s a way to connect with the present moment, the earth beneath your feet, and the people around you. This is what I aimed to capture in my photos: a quiet yet powerful meditation in motion.
As you look through these photos, I hope you’ll feel what I felt that day: a deep sense of presence, unity, and peace. Thousands of people walked together in silence, breathing in unison, guided by the simple but profound teachings of a master.
I invite you to take your time with this gallery. Let these images be more than just pictures—let them be a moment of mindfulness, a way to connect with the peace that Thich Nhat Hanh brought into the world.
